I like the Big Dipper too but unforntunately for me the Alpha star raises only about 1 degree above the horizon and the Delta star is almost invisible.

It is hard to see sometimes, but I can see it! It is just a beautiful constellation. I absolutely love looking for this constellation when the sky is clear!!

And it’s in your photo and can be seen from most points in the US. Draw a line from Acrux to Mimosa and extend it 3 x that distance. See that hazy spot? It’s Omega Centauri, biggest and brightest globular cluster in the sky. Easy to find with binoculars in urban skies. Five million or so ancient stars held together in a ball by gravity and orbiting around the Milky Way.

I’ve noticed that a vast majority of readers of EarthSky are from the continental mainland of the USA. When discussing viewing southern stars from the northern hemispheres, consider the USA territories. Hawaii gets mentioned and takes all the glory just for being a federalized state in union with the other 49 states.

We are so jealous. Hah !

I can only speak in reference to Puerto Rico where I reside for the last 18 years after practically a lifetime living in New Jersey. USA Virgin Islands are right next door to us.

Our Latitude : a glorious 17 degrees north.
Im sure the other USA territories in the pacific can claim bragging rights as well.

I worked as security guard at night and have the whole sky to myself from 9pm to 5am. (Shhh – dont tell my supervisor). The Southern Cross, what can I say, it simply looks gorgeous and Scorpius right at the zenith. First thing I do is open your EarthSky newsletter and see whats happening in our parts of the woods.

This coming summer of 2017, we all are waiting for that great total solar eclipse crossing the continental USA. For us US citizens, remember the Carolinas will see the end of that great celestial event as a total eclipse , but we in the caribbean USA territories will see it as a partial solar eclipse. Wow. That’s super good enough for me. So, if you can’t see it as “total”, come on down and see it as a “partial”. The weather is glorious and the beaches are the best in the world.

Would love to read, coming that moment, the staff of EarthSky mentioned us, that yes, we can experience that great event in the USA territories for the summer of 2017.

Love you guys ! ! !
