One of the most memorable moments of my life was a green flash my late husband and I saw in Maui. We were on the patio of a condo on the beach watching the whales and enjoying the coming sunset. Just as the sun dipped below the horizon, there was a bright green light that flashed the sky, immediately followed by a whale breaching in the exact spot where the green flash originated. It seemed to happen almost simultaneously. My husband and I just looked at each other with our mouths open, we couldn’t believe what we had witnessed. We both remarked that no matter what we did in our lives from that point on, nothing could top that.

I am professional family portrait photographer that has lived in Naples, Fl. for 47 years. And most of my family portraits are on the beach at sunset; so I have seen a lot of sunsets- tens of thousands. The images of what you are touting as the “green flash” are images of an extremely common occurance. During my 47 years of witnessing sunsets, I have seen only 1 “green flash”. It occured as the last tip of the sun went below the gulf, as in your pictures. But, a light emitted from the sun, quickly rising to cover half the sky; then quickly went back down. It was visible for maybe half a second. It was the same green as in your pictures. It didn’t flash, but rose quickly from the sun, then returned.
